How Do I Start My Car With A Dead Key Fob?

You are out and about, running errands with the kids, grocery shopping and now you made your last stop at the ice cream store. Everyone is happy and ready for the ride home. You push the unlock button of your car’s key fob, but nothing happens. You do it again. Still, nothing. Oh, no! The key fob is dead! Have no fear, help is here.

Step One

Inside the key fob is a real key that can be used to unlock your car. On the back of the fob, you will see a small button. Press and hold it down while you pull out the end of the key. There you have the key to open the door.

Step Two

On the vehicle’s driver door handle, you will find a cover or an insert that needs to be opened.

If the vehicle has a cover, find the small button at the bottom of the handle. Use the key to push the button which will release the cover. Remove the cover to reveal the key hole.

If you see an insert, pull out the door handle to the open position. Behind the handle you will find a small button on the edge. Use your key to press the button to free the insert. The insert is connected and will hang down. Let go of the door handle.

Step Three

Use the key to unlock the door. Depending on the model, replace the cover or insert into the door handle. Return the key inside the key fob.

Step Four

Get into the vehicle. Press the brake pedal and use the key fob to press the start button.

If you have an older model you will need to find the slot where you can insert the key fob. It will be in the front of the center console, behind the door just above the console or on the left side of the glove box. Once the key fob is inserted, you can start the vehicle as normal. After the vehicle has started, you can remove the key fob.
